Sony Pictures Acquires Film Rights to Steve Jobs

Sony Pictures has successfully acquired the filming rights to the biography of Steve Jobs, which will be written by Walter Isaacson. The biography is due to be released in its book form in approximately two weeks. This was actually written with help from Steve Jobs, so the creativity and ingenuity is no doubt inside. It will be the story of Jobs’ life, including details that the public had no idea about until now. Hopefully Sony will realize the importance of this story and capture it successfully when filming this glorious and fantastic journey for the public to enjoy.

Sony has not actually stated any plans for these new rights of there. Sony doesn’t seem to be interested in re-writing history, so their next move will be interesting. The company has been hurt for years since Jobs and many others claimed that Blu-ray is simply a “bag of hurt.” Sony claimed that it was the next new thing, but it’s rather interesting that they have decided to remove this feature from the next console, the PS4.

What exactly will they do with his biography? Will it be serious or capture his softer and comedic side? Either way, we will have to wait quite awhile to see, as a film may take some time, especially considering the book hasn’t yet been released, so there are some hidden details in the life of Jobs.

The Steve Jobs Legacy

Steve Jobs: February 24, 1955 - October 5, 2011
Today was a very sad day for the technological world. Founder and former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, inventor of the Macintosh, has passed away. Apple has confirmed this sad event on their website. Jobs was responsible for the introduction of the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, among many other things. He was aged 56.

Steve Jobs was adopted and grew up in Cupertino, where the headquarters of Apple is located. He met his longtime friend and fellow Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. These two met when they were 16 when a mutual friend introduced them. This was in 1971, which was only a few years before they began the legacy known as Apple.

In 1976, Apple was founded by Jobs, Wozniak, Ronald Wayne and A.C. Markkula Jr. They began to create personal computers that people could use at their homes. This began with the Apple II computers, which saw a little success. However, the first Macintosh was released in 1984 and became an outrageous success for the team. Jobs was actually fired from Apple in 1985 when John Sculley tried to take over. However, the people loyal to Apple still wanted Jobs. Eventually, Sculley nearly ran the company to the ground. It was between this time that Jobs founded Pixar Entertainment, a company responsible for many movies today, and NeXT Computer. Apple asked for Jobs to join them again and was reinstated as CEO as soon as Apple bought NeXT Computer.

Since Jobs returned, Apple has been pretty much dominating the technological world thanks to Jobs’ creative and ambitious nature. The iMac, iPod, iPhone, MacBook Air, and the iPad have been very notable and successful products because of Jobs. Jobs has gave himself the title as “one of the most important people in personal technology,” and no one has ever argued against that.

Everything that Jobs done will be remembered. He fought cancers and treatments, numerous surgeries, all while remaining at the top of the company. The stories that have been shared due to him firing certain people in elevators or him going to a neighborhood pool party with his soon; those will never be forgotten. Jobs maintained his reputation through troublesome times and truly represented the Buddhist nature that he was. He had the highest of standards and definitely had OCD, which gave him even more success. These traits have been imprinted into what Apple now holds as values. We must let the man who let all of this happen go, but never forget him, for his products and legacy are literally everywhere around us: Steve Jobs.

I will leave you with a video that I watched in my IT class. This is a speech that Jobs gave at Stanford.

The world has lost an innovator and visionary. However, his legacy is left behind and will always be remembered. While Apple and Pixar both continue to thrive, Jobs will never be forgotten. He is the reason we have so many of the things we do, and without him even Microsoft would not be possible today. Bill Gates has even stated that the competition and friendly nature of it kept both companies alive in times of stress.

Rest in Peace Steve Jobs. You will never be forgotten.

New iPhone 4S Coming Very Soon!

iPhone 4s out October 14, beefier specs, same body

Today was Apple’s big “Let’s Talk iPhone” event, and boy did they ever talk about iPhones, among other things. They have officially announced the iPhone 4S, which is close enough to an iPhone 5. There are quite a few upgrades, but it is still the same, great phone.

The iPhone 4S has a dual-core A5 chip, which clocks in at 1GHz. This processor is capable of delivering graphics seven times faster than the iPhone 4, which was already fast. Screen mirroring can also be done via AirPlay on an Apple TV or a wired connection. There will also not be a need for separate GSM (AT&T) and CDMA (Verizon) models. The device will be a world phone, hence the addition of Sprint.

The camera was delivered as 8 megapixels, but also has a backside illuminated sensor that lets the phone gather “73 percent more light per pixel than the iPhone 4′s version.” This is to help low-light photos. The iPhone 4S also captures images 33% faster than before, with 0.5 seconds in between shots. The iPhone 4 was already the fastest smartphone whilst taking photos, and now Apple has gotten even faster. The iPhone 4S is even capable of capturing 1080p video with built-in image stabilization.

Siri is a new piece of software included in the device. It is not clear whether this will become available for users on the iPhone 4 as of yet, but it is certain for the iPhone 4S. Siri is an “intelligent personal assistant” that is capable of finding the answers to your questions. Scott Forstall, senior VP of iOS software, asked the app “What is the weather like today?” Siri responded with the correct weather based on his location by pulling up the forecast. He then told the device to “wake me up tomorrow at 6AM,” in which the device stated “Ok, an alarm has been set for tomorrow at 6AM.”

Siri is capable of sending e-mails and text messages, make calendar entries, take notes, set reminders, and take dictation in apps that “normally require keyboard entry.” It is not clear whether or not developers will be able to support Siri in their applications as of yet.

Battery life? Well, it has 8 hours of talk time over a 3G network, 6 hours when browsing the Internet, and 9 hours browsing over WiFi. Paul Schiller claims that the iPhone 4S is able to reach 14.4 Mbps download speeds. This speed is roughly what carriers have as their non-LTE 4G networks. Thus, as expected, the iPhone 4S is not LTE-capable.

The iPhone 4S will be available in both black and white right off the bat. The prices will be $199 for 16Gb and $299 for 32GB. There is also a 64GB iPhone available for $399. All of these will require a two-year contract from AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint. The 8BG iPhone 4 and 3GS are now $99 or free with a two-year contract, respectively.

When will this amazing device be available? Well, preorders in the US, Canada, Australia, UK, France, Germany and Japan will begin October 7th. The actual retail release date of the iPhone 4S is October 14, which is just two days after iOS 5 becomes available. Apple has stated that the iPhone 4S will be in 70 different countries by the end of the year, which will be their fastest rollout to date.

Apple Announces “Let’s Talk iPhone” Event for October 2011

Upon much speculation and many months of rumors, Apple has officially announced its next media event, which will take place on Tuesday, October 4th at 10AM PDT (Pacific Daylight Time). This event will take place on Apple’s campus in Cupertino, just as the latest rumors predicted. The event will be led by Apple’s successor to Steve Jobs and new CEO, Tim Cook.

A graphic of the invitation to the event is shown above, which includes four iOS app icons, representing Calendar, Clock, Maps and Phone. It also has the quote “Let’s talk iPhone,” which hints at the rumored iPhone 5 and the iPhone for Sprint’s network. It’s also interesting to note that Apple decided to be very detailed and creative with the invitation. If you notice, the Calendar app reads October 4th, for the closest upcoming 4th that is on a Tuesday is in October 2011. Then, the Clock app has 10:00AM (Pacific due to their location). As for the Map app, it actually describes Apple’s campus location. And last but not least, the Phone app, which symbolizes the invitation and the “Let’s talk iPhone” idea.

While rumors exist and some are more credible than others, fans are still wondering what exactly will be released or talked about in this event, especially when it comes to the iPhone it seems. For example, it’s expected that iOS 5 will be made available to the public and that an all-new iPhone 5 will be released, which basically is an iPhone 4 with a better camera, though it doesn’t really need one. However, people are still left guessing.

iPhone’s aren’t the only speculations being drawn about this event. A lot of people are thinking that we may see the release of a white iPod touch. This event is annual and is usually all about the iPod and its new generations. Thus, this color change would be just like Apple and be fairly simple to do. It would key in on the history of the iPod event. Who knows, they may even release new generations for us. Apple is also expected to tell us what is going to happen to all of its products, whether they will be upgraded, discarded, or remain the same this year as they did last year, which could definitely be interesting.

iTunes TV Rentals Shut Down

Merely a year after Apple introduced 99-cent TV rentals via iTunes, they have decided to discontinue that part of the service. The change was not formally announced, yet Apple TV users began noticing the ability to rent these TV shows had disappeared, which eventually led to Apple confirming that rentals were no longer an option.

“iTunes customers have shown they overwhelmingly prefer buying TV shows,” Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr told All Things D. “iTunes in the Cloud lets customers download and watch their past TV purchases from their iOS devices, Apple TV, Mac or PC allowing them to enjoy their programming whenever and however they choose.”

Many TV networks held back when Apple first announced the 99-cent rentals a year ago. Users could rent some popular shows such as The Office and Glee, the majority of iTunes’ TV content remained purchase-only. Apple TV’s were actually only capable of renting for nearly a year until Apple added the ability for the devices to stream your past iTunes purchases and to make new TV purchases.

Apple TV users now have the purchasing feature back, but Apple has also decided to discontinue the already struggling rental feature. Apple is supposedly working on a possible subscription service, so they may feel that there is no need or point to selling something which lies in between purchases and subscriptions, especially if it isn’t a big hit and a trend with the users.

Tim Cook Reassures That Apple Will Not Change

Tim Cook, Apple's New CEO

Tim Cook has stepped up as CEO of Apple, and his first role is to address people interested in Apple Inc. He has decided to let everyone know that despite Steve Jobs stepping down, the company isn’t going to change. This was actually done via e-mail to all Apple employees on Thursday morning. Cook also added that working with Jobs and Apple has been “the privilege of a lifetime,” and that he is looking forward to the years ahead.

Below is the full text of the e-mail:

Team:

I am looking forward to the amazing opportunity of serving as CEO of the most innovative company in the world. Joining Apple was the best decision I’ve ever made and it’s been the privilege of a lifetime to work for Apple and Steve for over 13 years. I share Steve’s optimism for Apple’s bright future.

Steve has been an incredible leader and mentor to me, as well as to the entire executive team and our amazing employees. We are really looking forward to Steve’s ongoing guidance and inspiration as our Chairman.

I want you to be confident that Apple is not going to change. I cherish and celebrate Apple’s unique principles and values. Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that—it is in our DNA. We are going to continue to make the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.

I love Apple and I am looking forward to diving into my new role. All of the incredible support from the Board, the executive team and many of you has been inspiring. I am confident our best years lie ahead of us and that together we will continue to make Apple the magical place that it is.

Tim

Cook has indeed contributed greatly to Apple’s success in his previous role as Chief Operating Officer. He is the man responsible for lowering Apple’s hardware and gadget prices as well as making deals with component suppliers that will give Apple the upper hand in the market. Cook is also directly responsible for making it challenging for other companies to compete against the iPad on price alone. Cook is described as being “gruff and assertive,” but he also makes people feel secure. Apple has been slowly introducing Cook to the public via Apple keynotes over the last few years to get a feel for how the public reacts. In the public’s eye, Cook has been respected and seems to be well-liked.

While I understand that it is impossible to truly replace the efforts, personality, and success of Steve Jobs, but Apple and Jobs know that publicly supporting Tim Cook is definitely the best thing they can do in attempt to at least continue the reign of Apple and its products. Best of luck to Tim Cook and his future at Apple.

Steve Jobs Has Officially Resigned as Apple’s CEO

Basically out of nowhere on Wednesday evening, Apple’s Board of Directors announced that Steve Jobs has officially put in his resignation as CEO of the company. Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, Tim Cook, has been named as Jobs’ successor and plans to begin taking over as CEO effective immediately, meaning by now he already is.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” Apple Board member and Genetech chairman Art Levinson said in a statement. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

Steve Jobs has been through a lot in recent years. In 2004, Jobs underwent a surgery that was very complicated, but successful, that removed a tumor in his pancreas. Within a few months, he was back at work. This surgery removes much of the pancreas and some of the digestive tract as an end result, which lead to the dramatic weight loss Jobs’ suffered in 2008. In 2009, Jobs went on a 6-month medical leave, where he received a liver transplant. In January of 2011, Jobs announced once again that he was going on medical leave, and didn’t discuss why. People were genuinely afraid that this might be the end of Jobs. However, the warrior fought through his issues and came back stronger than ever in time to release the iPad 2.

Below is the text of Jobs’ letter addressed to the Board and the Apple Community that was distributed on Wednesday evening:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Tim Cook (left) and Steve Jobs (right)

Tim Cook has been quite active under Steve Jobs. Surely a man with as much intelligence as Steve Jobs would make sure his successor has what it takes. Thus, if Jobs is confident, then I trust that he can do a swell job as the new CEO of Apple. Though, don’t expect things to change as much as you might think except for the face, as Steve Jobs will still spread his creativity and inspirations through his position as Chairman of the Board.

22 More Fake Apple Stores Found in China

Fake products are all over in China; there is nothing new in that statement. It’s very easy for the average American to find fake products, but most of the Western hemisphere is unaware that entire counterfeit stores exist, or did. Chinese authorities ordered the shutdown of two fake Apple Stores in Kunming recently, but now 22 more have been identified as fake. People think there are probably even more than that out there as well.
In late July, the blog BirdAbroad posted photos of what seemed like a legit Apple retail store that the blogger had been to while visiting China. However, the blogger later found out that the store was fake. The store wasn’t actually selling fake products, as customers could buy real Apple iPads, iPhones, and Macs. The employees didn’t even know they weren’t working for Apple retail.

Apple filed a trademark lawsuit against 50 anonymous store owners and businesses over various fake Apple Stores. This is when the authorities in Kunming ordered that two fake stores were to close because they did not have proper business permits. Chinese law enforcement was apparently aware that there were more unauthorized stores, which led them to finding 22 more fake Apple retail stores. According to Reuters, China’s Administration for Industry and Commerce ordered the stores to stop using Apple’s logo after Apple China filed a complaint about unfair competition as well as trademark infringement.

This story is just one of the reminders as to why China remains near the top of the US Trade Representative’s annual Priority Watch List. This is a list highlighting countries that the US believes are the most repeat intellectual property offenders. China has promised for years that it will make more of an effort to crack down on various types of intellectual property infringement. The example of stores shutting down in Kunming shows that this has indeed happened, or could start to happen. Expect to hear more reports of unauthorized Apple Stores and their closings over the next few months.

Apple Devices to Have Projection Capabilities

Apple’s newest patent application has provided some additional hints that projectors could one day make their way into future Apple products, including the company’s phones, tablets, and as an accessory for notebook computers to help make it easier to share content with one another and cut down on the cost to share via projection screens.

The patent application, titled “Projected display shared workspaces,” was filed in February 2010 and pulled up this morning by Patently Apple. This patent outlines a system for taking what’s on the current screen on projecting it onto a nearby surface. Interesting enough, this particular patent filing can combine projections from multiple devices into one screen, in what is titled the “shared workspace.”

Apple noted that “consumers frequently share data stored on electronic devices with other people,” but portable devices typically come with small screens, which makes it difficult to share with a group of people. Apple’s solution promises to solve the issue by offering a way for devices with projectors to link up to one another in order. This technology will use a server or a close-range transfer medium similar to BlueTooth, ZigBee, or near-field communications (NFC) to ferry the data back and forth between the devices.

Handheld projectors, which have become more and more popular among point-and-shoot cameras, cell phones, and standalone devices, are commonly referred to as “pico” projectors. Interestingly enough, Apple has purchased the domain name of Applepico.com, though the servers remain offline.

Apple filed a patent that integrated projectors into portable devices back in April 2010, where the projector would be in a notebook computer. A month before that, they wanted to do the same if attached to phones, which was linked to a 2007 patent application that had any built-in projection details to display media.

Pico projectors continue to become more popular as newer technologies bring down the physical space and power needed to put built-in projectors into portable devices. Alps Electric developed a new lens that measured just under a millimeter squared, in which they plan to produce the units in bulk by the end of the year. Surely, miniaturization has its place in the tech world, and it’s growing rapidly and very, very small.
