Despite saying they were finished, LulzSec is back and coming strong for their first return hack. This attack was aimed at Rupert Murdoch, “beleaguered” boss of News Corporation. LulzSec broke into the servers belonging to News International, the News Corp subsidiary that owns Murdoch’s UK newspapers, and published a fake report of the “media mogul’s” death. This report was disguised as a copy of the daily tabloid The Sun that claimed that Murdoch ingested a large quantity of palladium before “stumbling into his garden” and dying.

The fake article page was published on a hacked server used to host a preview of upcoming changes to another News International paper, The Times. The hackers forced The Sun‘s homepage to redirect to the hacked preview server. The large amount of traffic overwhelmed the preview server, causing it to generate errors and get taken down. The redirect now goes to LulzSec’s Twitter page. The reason they did all of this redirecting is that the The Times system has been rooted, while the The Sun system has not.

According to individuals involved with both LulzSec and Anonymous, they are claiming to have hacked into News International’s mail servers, with a press release is due tomorrow. News International is being targeted because of the News of the World phone hacking scandal, in which members hacked thousands of phones, including murder victims, that has already caused the resignation of several high-ranking executives within the Murdoch empire and the closure of News of the World newspaper.

LulzSec has also claimed to have the e-mail addresses and passwords of various News International employees, including former Chief Executive Rebekah Brooks. Given the track record of LulzSec and Anonymous, they probably aren’t joking about having a few e-mails and passwords.
