Some people and their toys

Steve Wozniak, cofounder of the Apple corporation, was recently asked by a Newsweek reporter about the upcoming iPad release.  What flabbergasted me was not his prediction about the iPad’s success, but the number of tech devices he carries with himself.  He has, in his car, two iPhones, a Google phone, a Droid plus 2 GPS devices. Now, Wozniak explains that he has the second iPhone as a backup solution to the short battery life, so I can understand that.  But two GPS devices?  Does he like to have them go at it as to which one gets the directions right?

Some iPads will ship late

If you pre-ordered an iPad and were expecting it to be in your hands by the April 3 ship date, you may be waiting a little more. Apple apparently has so many pre-orders for the tablet that they are having trouble matching the demand. The first batch will ship on April 2 as planned, but if you don’t get it then, the next batch is scheduled to go out on April 12.

Robot Babies in Japan

There’s a Japanese school that has developed an extremely like-like robotic doll with the hopes that it will encourage Japanese children to consider starting a family when they’re of age. Apparently, Japan has the lowest birth rate of any developed country. Too much time playing video games I guess. I wonder if that’s what the developers of the old Teddy Ruxpin dolls were shooting for. You remember Teddy right? The teddy bear with a cassette player in his back that would play a tape and make the lips and eyes move? That was one freaky toy.

Do they give away the secret sauce

Apparently, there is a new training practice for McDonald’s employees in Japan.  The revolutionary new method? The NintendoDS and I am not kidding.  The DS is very popular in Japan, obviously, and the Golden Arches are hoping to make the training process more efficient, delivering it in a way that is more readily received for the current generation.  Would you still want to work there, even if the trainer was Mario?

Air…a finite frontier

Would you believe there is such a thing as not enough air? That’s what certain wireless companies are starting to say. Since there are only so many usable frequencies and with so many people using cell phones for more than just emergencies, companies are scrambling to find ways of securing more of those frequencies. It almost makes one want to invest in internet phones so that you can still get phone service at home cheaply and have a cell phone for emergency uses.

The next generation is coming

Internet too slow for you? Why not wait and switch to wireless technology for surfing the net. Sprint is set to introduce the next generation of wireless network, 4G. This trechnology will make cell phones surf the net faster than computers, at least that is what the experts are predicting. Just as with any new technology, even enhanced versions of current tech (*cough, Windows Vista, *cough) I’ll wait to see it in action before touting it’s advantages.

How will the iPad fare?

If pre-order sales are any indicator, pretty good.  Analysts are predicting that Apple will sell more of the tablet computers in the first 3 months of release than the original iPhone. Now, before we all start thinking that Apple has the market cornered or anything, let’s put the iPhone release in context. When it was released, there were few if any touch screen smart phones, so it was a brand new market. Second, the iPhone is available only through AT&T, one of a few wireless companies nationwide. Third, the iPad is not limited to being offered by only AT&T. Fourth, the iPad is coming out after the iPhone has proven to be a successful product. So, the iPad is predicted to sell more than the iPhone. Well D’UH!

Putting the cart before the horse…

or in this case, the app in front of the iPad.  National Public Radio is quickly working on an app as well as a redesign of the website for the unlaunched iPad.  The reason being Apple and Adobe’s standoff concerning the new slate device. So, it looks like with this move, Apple will just say tough luck to any site that uses Adobe Flash in their presentation.

When fanboys go too far

There is a 31 year old British citizen who was removed from his job for not removing his hood.  Why was he wearing the hood? Because he’s a Jedi.  That’s right, he is part of the Jedi religion. Apparently, Jedi followers are allowed to wear hoods. Now, I’m not going to turn this into a religious debate, but what I do want to know is the significance of the hood.  Most religions have some reason for their doctrine and clothing, whether you agree with it or not, so what is the point of the hood? I like Star Wars, grew up with the original trilogy, enjoy the prequel, but the only time I saw hood was when people wanted to conceal their identity.  Is this guy trying to hide something?
